We look at why Stevenson was a cut above Lopez.
Shakur Stevenson ultimately won a wide UD points shut out over Teofimo Lopez in a bout that many thought he would have problems in.
Not us.
He was moving up in weight and he did in fact become four-weight champion of the world. A select club that not many ever join.
He won every round and not only that absolutely pinged Lopez with the jab in there at points. What impressed us was how he dealt with each round as it came.
Each round to us looked like he was setting out to do something new in each round. In terms of busting up Lopez in a new way. From different angles. Again and again.
One of the most vicious dismantling beatings we have seen in some time. A real hammering and Lopez had been already massively on the decline in boxing a year before that anyway.
Stevenson now moves back down in weight of course as he had no business really being up that high in weight — until maybe later in his career — he can always go back there.
But for now back down in weight to a more natural weight but even more than that — many more big fights and opportunities for him in the slightly lower weight class as well.
