Anthony Joshua has retired from boxing according to his uncle recently but he didn’t officially announce that himself just yet.
Following a car crash in Nigeria. However, times are changing for the heavyweight division as boxing’s return to the pinnacle of all worldwide sport continues.
There is an intriguing dynamic happening that new and maybe even some old boxing fans are missing at the moment at heavyweight.
There is both a mix of young prospects and contenders breaking through and old former champions returning at the same time.
The likes of Moses Itauma of the UK, Daniel Dubois of the UK and Jared Anderson of the US lead some of the young guns but there is many more.
Dubois is already a former IBF heavyweight champion of course.
Heavyweight Youth And Former Champions Returning Wave
New contenders are coming from Germany and all over the world in the division.
All gunning for the main man at heavyweight Oleksandr Usyk who remains for us also the number one pound for pound fighter in the entire sport since Terence Crawford retired. There’s also the new WBO champion Wardley and other contenders around like Joseph Parker and others also.
But former world heavyweight champions like Deontay Wilder, Tyson Fury and Wladimir Klitschko are all returning as well.
Klitschko hasn’t confirmed it yet officially but he is back in intensive sparring in the gym so you’d expect him to come back easily enough at some point this year — how he will perform in the boxing ring remains to be seen however.
This blend of youth and former champions along with new contenders with Usyk as number one creates a dynamic mix for the heavyweight division at the moment.
Good times ahead this year for the heavyweights, expect lots of knockouts.
