People always talk about the jab being the most important punch in the sport and it is, by the way, but maybe there is something even more important.
In terms of a fighter’s arsenal on fight night.
Maybe it is not talked about enough and that’s — timing.
Everything revolves around timing in all levels of the sport, from the lowest grass roots level in amateur boxing to the highest professional world championship bouts involving pound for pound kings in pro boxing.
Counter punching is often employed by some of the best boxers in the world at the highest level of boxing and to effectively counter an opponent’s oncoming attach, timing must be spot on.
Remember some of the Juan Manuel Marquez of Mexico’s fights with Filipino legend Manny Pacquiao.
It was Marquez’ timing that allowed him to counter act Pacquiao’s superior speed in the ring at the time, it allowed him to land better more effective scoring shots than Pacquiao’s relentless speed on the night.
The Most Underrated Weapon in Boxing
Ultimately, this culminated in one of the best knockouts ever seen in the history of the entire sport when Marquez chinned Pacquiao with the big over hand right to flatten him.
He timed the shot perfectly and walked the overly eager and aggressive Pacquiao right onto it at the time.
Timing is everything.
Alas, in the professional fight game and in life as well — maybe.
The time is good for the entire sport of boxing at the moment but its bigtime hay day is coming back soon enough.
Professional boxing is the highest level of the sport and now it is being reformed with an iron fist in live time to take it to the next level now.
Minus a few bums.
