Everyone who is a boxing fan remembers Calzaghe and Hopkins clashing in front of the press to set up their big fight back in the day.
Hopkins as a joke which he wasn’t serious about obviously said at the time:
‘I would never let a white boy beat me.”
All just part of the promotion of professional fights of course, nothing more.
But how did it come about?
“I couldn’t spar. I even paid my own airfare when we went to see Hatton fight Mayweather. The main reason I wanted to go was to bump into Hopkins, and it worked out perfectly. That’s when he made that comment.”
The fight was made and the rest was history.
Joe Calzaghe won a very close split decision on points and retired on top and undefeated.
A living legend.
