Deontay Wilder surfaced at Contender Series as talks heat up for a farewell fight against Oleksandr Usyk. But at 40, with a fading right hand and a brutal recent record, the question isn’t whether Wilder can fight again — it’s whether he should.
Deontay looked cooked and shot to bits against Derek Chisora earlier this year in the UK.
His iconic punch had even gone.
It landed on Chisora and the Englishman did not move. Deontay’s legs had gone completely also.
He turned up the Contender Series and apparently he is near signing a fight vs Usyk, some notes here;
- Usyk has named Wilder as his preferred farewell opponent
- Wilder’s manager Shelly Finkel says they’re open to it
- No signed deal yet, timing still unresolved
- No titles on the line — Usyk vacated his belts — belts count for little these days in boxing
- Would be Deontay Wilder vs Usyk is surely the biggest payday for the American since the Fury trilogy
- Wilder has lost four of his last six fights
- Chisora win was a split decision — no knockout
- Wilder turned 40
- Usyk has never been knocked down as a heavyweight
- Likely a double retirement fight for both meng
Overall, they might put together a sizeable chunk of money for such a fight, but Deontay is in serious danger at this point.
Even against a faded Usyk that stank the place out against Rico recently, a kickboxing champion that nearly beat Usyk.
