Why Canelo trying to use more footwork against work horse Mbilli might not be wise

Saul Canelo Alvarez is training to use more footwork against Christian Mbilli, but experts warn this is a dangerous strategy.

It is something that Alvarez has done a lot of as he got older, he has tried to really turn into a pure boxer type.

But his old days had seen him scrap like some of the best and box a bit too, he needs the fire to be at his best.

Some notes on his technical plan of more movement against Mbilli soon;

  • Canelo Alvarez plans extra lateral movement against relentless Mbilli
  • At 36, circling drains his gas tank faster
  • Mbilli throws relentless combinations in high volume
  • Constant direction changes fatigue legs without landing punches
  • He tired against Crawford despite only 28 punches per round
  • Moving lets Mbilli control pace and hunt him down
  • Canelo’s usual style is conserving energy, not running
  • Stationary means volume overwhelms him; moving means dead legs
  • Munguia doesn’t prepare him for Mbilli’s nonstop pace
  • He must hurt Mbilli early or fade in deep rounds

Canelo remains the biggest name in boxing even to this day.

But he is not the same fighter he once had been, he is on the slide but it is a case of that rate of being on the slide.

He had been comprehensively outboxed by Bud Crawford last year, his motivation and his game plan are both up for debate going into the Mbilli fight.

And then some.
