Does Rey Vargas’s technical style have a place in modern boxing?
Some think he still does. Hasn’t fought much in recent years though, sure.
He could be a capable boxer on his day, if on form, could Vargas. At thirty five the Mexican is not old either yet, he can comeback.
Some thoughts on this from us on the Rey Vargas’ fight and boxing style being a chess one and some notes on him for those unfamiliar to him;
- His chess-match style showcases strategic depth purists love, not for everyone but it is for some
- He used a long jab and distance control to neutralize aggression in his day did Vargas
- His draw with Nick Ball was dramatic with knockdowns and controversy, he can fight in that chess boxing style also at times
- Boxing history proves defensive technicians can draw massive audiences
- Tests opponents’ IQ, patience, and adaptability
- Frustrated opponents take risks that create openings for counters
- Legends like Mayweather and Pep made skill captivating despite their chess approach at times also
- Provides essential stylistic diversity against pressure fighters
- That style teaches younger boxers the value of fundamentals
Alas, the Mexican is at this point 36-1-1-22 KO as a professional boxer as of the moment.
He has not fought since the Nick Ball fight back in Mar 2024 — that ended in a stalemate.
Before that he lost to O’Shaquie Foster the year before that.
He only boxed then a couple of times in years before that even.
So, he has been very inactive.
There is still a place in boxing for Rey Vargas and immediate fights if he is interested in returning, though.
The thirty five year old featherweight can still fight immediately again if the desire is there.
There are fights there for him immediately even.
Don’t count him out from fighting again, particularly as the smaller divisions are thriving in the sport again also.
Lots of bouts there for him if he is interested.
