Aaron Mckenna had a very solid victory for a title on Saturday night but some consider him the champion of the world at middleweight, this is a mistake.
He is not.
He captured a vacant belt simply that had been vacant and one at that from a no out of date and redundant sanctioning body and organization that is no longer considered credible in professional boxing.
In fact, it is part of the old four belt organizations that people do not care for anymore, people simply are interested in the big fights at this point and that has been proven beyond any reasonable doubt by this point.
Some months ago at this point as fighters, the best boxers in the sport, simply continue to vacate and toss their old belts in the trash can in the event of a bigger fight and opportunity coming up.
Usyk, the heavyweight lineal champion of the world, did this himself very recently putting all the belts on vacate and slinging them in the dumpster to go after one big final fight instead as opposed to fighting a boring mandatory that no one had interest in.
The main champion in each division, is referred to as the lineal champion, the man that beat the man, basically.
For a small number of new audience to think that Aaron Mckenna is the main man at middleweight is simply misinforming them.
In the event he had beaten all the other considered main fighters at the highest level of the division, sure, then, but not a standard UD points victory like he had against someone no one had heard of on Saturday night in Dublin, Ireland.
People are rightly outraged for him or any one to call him the middleweight champion of the middleweight champion 0f the world.
People are rightly disgusted in that happening, but it is too small of it happening to be really of any importance.
He himself and the network he fights on of course know that is not the case.
Look, he got the victory and continues on but has a lot to improve on.
Someone like Erislandy Lara of Cuba if motivated goes in there against him in that division and outboxes him easy.
No problem.
So to call him the middleweight champion of the middleweight world champion is beyond wrong, it is disrespectful to the entire sport of boxing.
The history of this great sport has seen champions at that division like Canelo Alvarez of Mexico and before him Gennady Golovkin of Kazakhstan and before him Bernard Hopkins of America considered the main last champions of the world at middleweight.
In that order chronologically in the noble art of professional boxing, prize fighting, the hurt business, the sweet science of boxing.
Boxing legends like Sugar Ray Robinson of America considered the best of them all in the division back in the day.
Imagine the likes of him and American Jake Lamotta in today’s times getting told Aaaron Mckenna is the middleweight champion of the world.
They’d tell you where to go.
No way is he. He simply attained a no longer important, no longer relevant, no defunct out of use belt from an old belt company.
Nothing more. In a very weak division and era for it, it must be said.
He needs to prove himself against the best in the division first.
