Aaron Mckenna is the latest champion in boxing in a time the sport is moving back to the masses in popularity.
But the old belt companies certainly are not.
He got the victory at middleweight in Dublin in the Ireland on Saturday night for one of their titles but it had been just a solid scrap also.
He got the victory on UD on points, some things on his victory;
- ab was the primary weapon – established early and used constantly to control range and tempo
- Outworked Oliha with superior volume, especially in the second half
- Strongest in championship rounds – landed best shots in rounds 10–12 as Oliha faded
- Won inside exchanges with sharp uppercuts and body shots, not just long-range boxing
- Made Oliha miss consistently with clean footwork and smart movement
- Took over from round three and never relinquished control
- Dominated a previously unbeaten opponent – unofficially scored as wide as 119-109
- Official scores reflected clear victory: 118-110, 117-111, and 116-112
- Landed short, thudding punches that accumulated damage without chasing a knockout
- Stayed disciplined through a cut in round 11, boxing smartly to the final bell
