Canelo Alvarez to say both David Benavidez and Ryan Garcia are not Mexican and dismiss the heritage is very off the correct answer.
Both are Mexican-American and both boxers claim Mexican heritage.
Alvarez said because they are not born in Mexico they are not truly Mexican. This has caused a bit of a stir in boxing.
Here is why Canelo is wrong:
- Heritage is blood and culture, not a border — both have Mexican parents and traditions.
- Double standard — calls Garcia “Mexican-American star” but denies Benavidez the same.
- Avoidance tactic — using heritage to dodge fighting Benavidez at 168.
- Contradicts his own past — he embraced Garcia’s “Mexican Bond” but now gatekeeps.
- He ignores boxing history — Mexican-Americans like De La Hoya have always been embraced.
- De La Hoya called it “unfair” — said Canelo is wrong to dismiss Mexican-American fighters.
- He trained with Garcia — previously recognized their shared heritage, now changes tune.
- It’s an excuse, not principle — convenient timing to dismiss a dangerous opponent.
- Performance over birthplace — fighting with heart and respect earns the Mexican fanbase.
- Erases generations of Mexican-American champions — who have contributed to Mexico’s boxing legacy.
At the end of the day, both claim the heritage and that is enough for them to do so, at the end of the day.
On its own merits.
Benavidez particularly is very passionate about Mexican and he took over the recent Cinco De Mayo date just gone from Canelo.
Scoring a big stoppage victory over Gilberto ‘Zurdo’ Ramirez (from Mexico) last May just gone.
Canelo is a bit jealous of that maybe.
