Lamont Roach picked William Zepeda as an opponent in their big boxing match and spoke on the reason behind doing so.
Speaking a short time ago at the final presser American Roach said of picking Zepeda as an opponent for the fight;
‘When the fight was offered, I thought it was a wonderful opportunity to fight one of the best fighters in the weight class for so long. Zepeda has been the number one contender in a few sanctioning bodies.’
Sometimes they say be careful in what you wish for.
Zepeda is a tough opponent, remember the following;
- Relentless, record-breaking punch output that drowns out precise counters
- Sustained body attack from round one designed to take away Roach’s legs and movement
- Constant pressure that never lets Roach reset or set up his sharpest shots
- Judges tend to favor high activity over selective, “choosy” punching
- Durable enough to walk through shots while still throwing in bunches
- Body work directly targets Roach’s footwork, his biggest defensive asset
- Roach’s only loss came against a volume-puncher who outworked him
- Unique offensive style (heavy body punching) differs from Roach’s past elite opponents
- Forces Roach to be defensively perfect for all 12 rounds under nonstop fire
- Relentless “punch, punch, punch” mentality makes it a grueling test of will, not just skill
Zepeda is a formidable opponent and not long ago he gave Shakur Stevenson a heck of a fight.
If Roach has any aspirations of fighting the best, he must be impressive this Saturday and deal with one of Mexico’s toughest current boxers.
