Errol Spence has now gone into depth on his loss tonight in boxing to Tim Tszyu in Australia that saw him retire from boxing tonight.
He got outpointed by unanimous decision by Australian Tim Tszyu tonight.
In a solid scrap but one Spence showed himself to be over the hill in.
Moments ago a short time ago he said:
On the fight outcome:
“No, it didn’t go the way I hoped it would. It was a tough, long fight, but I was able to go the full 12 rounds and finish the fight. It just didn’t go the way I wanted it to. Much respect to Tim.”
On whether Tszyu performed better than expected:
“He was exactly what I expected.”
On what Tszyu did well:
“He was timing his shots really well, and my timing was a bit off.On whether the three-year layoff played a role:
It could be, but I’m not going to use that as an excuse. Tim has been fighting the same way.”
On retirement:
“There’s no reason to fight anymore. I answered a lot of questions for myself personally tonight. Going 12 rounds and realizing how long those 12 rounds felt… it’s time to hang them up. That 12 rounds usually isn’t that long, but tonight it was. It’s time to hang them up.”
On whether he thought the fight wasn’t going well at some point:
“Yeah, for sure.”
On how the early rounds felt after three years away:
“The first two or three rounds felt okay. I wasn’t nervous or anything like that. But after the fight, I was sore. I don’t remember 12 rounds ever feeling like that. That’s how I knew it was time to hang them up. You can’t be off for that long and then come back and think you can fight a 12-round fight against a high-caliber opponent like that.”
On why he came back:
“I came back because we’re in an era where people are scared to fail. Everything’s on social media, everything’s recorded. People are scared to jump out and do things because they’re afraid of getting posted and people laughing at them. But the same people laughing and making jokes on social media have never really done anything with their lives. I’m sure a lot of people had things to say, but they wouldn’t have the guts to do what I did — come back and fight a quality opponent like Tim Tszyu in his backyard and go the full distance while putting on a great show.”
On what he’s most proud of in his career:
“I’m most proud of keeping my finances in order and having enough money in the bank — even before this fight — to be able to retire and still live the same life I’m living now, 10, 15, or 20 years from now. I’m still going to be okay. That’s what I’m most proud of. In a sport where a lot of boxers, and even 99% of Hall of Famers, retire broke, I’m in a position where even without this fight I would have still been okay.”
On realizing it was time to retire:
“A lot of boxers have too much pride and ego. They can’t make the decision that it’s time to hang it up, so they just keep going and going. You have to be real with yourself. When it’s time, it’s time. After tonight, y’all won’t see me in the ring again.”
All in all, a solid career had Texan Errol Spence and you would have to put him somewhere near the top 20 American welterweights of all time.
The division has been a very fruitful one for US over the years and he entertained many with his big hitting style in some fights certainly.
