Errol Spence’s Eye of the Tiger: Can His Body Hold Up One More Time?

"Errol Spence's Eye of the Tiger: Can His Body Hold Up One More Time?"

Errol Spence returns this weekend after three years away from boxing but his body has been through a lot of injuries over the years.

Not just in boxing and surgeries and so on but remember, he had a near fatal car crash some years ago as well.

The Texan former welterweight world champion nearly died in a Ferrari accident where he totaled the car and was lucky to walk away with his life.

He was never the same since after that and that is many years ago now and after that, three years ago Terence Crawford wiped him out basically.

Some things to take into account ahead of the big fight this weekend on all the injuries over the years:

  • He suffered a detached retina in his left eye in 2021, requiring surgery and canceling the Pacquiao fight .
  • Tszyu has vowed to target that eye: “I’m coming for every limb, especially that retina” .
  • Spence was ejected from a Ferrari in a 2019 car crash that “nearly took everything” .
  • He entered the Crawford fight with fractured ribs but didn’t disclose the injury .
  • He underwent cataract surgery following the eye injury, adding to medical concerns .
  • His added upper body muscle for the 160lb weight jump has made him look “stiff” and lacking mobility .
  • Spence says he feels “great” and needed the time off “just to let everything heal” .
  • He’s been working with new trainer Ronnie Shields to rebuild from the ground up .
  • His balance is reportedly “off” in shadow boxing footage—a sign of physical decline .
  • Spence admitted: “It took a while for my body to really get adjusted to pushing the pace” .

The retina injury alone is enough to cause huge problems for any boxer.

But everything else on top of that and the Terence Crawford beating for his literally last fight he had, three years ago, to compound all of this as well.

It is a tall order for Spence this weekend fighting in Australia all the way up near 160 pounds for the first time as well against Tim Tszyu.

He has his family there as well and for a man that should be focused on combat.

Bringing your kids and family around also shows us he is just treating the trip to Australia as a vacation.

Australians are a fighting race, known for fighting the world over. Tim Tszyu is up to the mark and has no ring rust and wants to win this weekend.
