Errol Spence junior comes back to boxing this weekend for the first time in over three years away from professional boxing.
Errol The Truth Spence fights Australian Tim Tszyu in a catchweight bout this weekend after losing to Terence Crawford, his fellow American, over three years ago by TKO.
Some things to bare in mind:
- He hasn’t fought in three years since the brutal TKO loss to Terence Crawford in 2023 .
- Training footage shows him looking “slow and very dosile, rigid and stiff” with no fluidity .
- His foot speed is described as “shockingly slow” with poor balance and “stuck in the mud” movement .
- He added significant upper body muscle for the weight jump, making him look mechanical and heavy .
- At 36 years old, reaction times naturally decline—and the three-year layoff has only accelerated that .
- Tszyu’s trainer Jeff Fenech believes Spence’s time away has left him “not switched on” mentally .
- Spence himself admitted training camp was hard and there were “times where I just wanted to go home” .
- Former opponent Shawn Porter still believes stylistically the fight favors Spence if he can find his old rhythm .
- Tszyu is flat-footed and keeps his head on the centerline—an opening Spence used to exploit .
- Spence says: “People can think what they want, but on fight night they’re gonna see something different” .
Errol Spence Jr needs to get in there and show that he can first still compete at somewhere near the highest level of professional boxing.
That in itself would be an achievement but to actually beat Tim Tszyu would look to be not easy to do by any stretch.
