A very out of character Oleksandr Usyk is starting to act strangely on the fight week of a strange fight and event for him.
He takes on a kickboxing champion called Rico this weekend who’s only ever had one professional boxing match — literally ever.
He’s been doing interviews earlier today and David Benavidez came up as an opponent in one.
He shut the topic down straight away and we don’t recall Usyk ever doing that ever, on any opponent, in all his time in boxing.
Some things to keep in mind and know as well for those new to the sport at the moment:
- Usyk has been noticeably quiet or dismissive when asked about David Benavidez during this fight week.
- This behavior stands out because Usyk is normally open, respectful, and engaging when discussing potential future opponents.
- Multiple reports and fan observations noted Usyk redirecting or shutting down Benavidez-related questions.
- Benavidez has publicly expressed interest in facing Usyk one day after moving up in weight.
- Usyk is 39 years old and has repeatedly said he plans to retire around age 41.
- Observers find it unusual because Usyk has historically been very accessible and honest in media.
Not like Usyk at all.
Strange.
Particularly on a fight week against an opponent he is expected to easily beat.
Maybe he is feeling some pressure at the moment because of this.
Usyk has been mentioned for a fight other fights recently as well.
