David Benavidez moves up cruiserweight is not something for him to take lightly ahead of the big fight with Gilberto ‘Zurdo’ Ramirez however.
Benavidez is a Mexican-American and ‘Zurdo’ a full Mexican so there is going to be a great buzz in the crowd in Vegas from Mexican fans and American fans and international fans on the night come round one as well.
Something to think about for Benavidez and Ramirez as well as it is Cinco De Mayo weekend as well — a big weekend in boxing this weekend for the sport in America and Mexico.
Benavidez is looking to become a three-weight world champion all the way up at Cruiserweight and although he knows Zurdo well and has sparred him extensively, this move to cruiserweight is not something to be played with.
If he has any sense he will know this but if he is arrogant he will find out more painfully and viciously when the brutal reality of what is ahead of him confronts him when he least expects it.
He calls himself ‘The Monster’ but that’s just in boxing, in life or away from sports, he knows that means nothing when real things come up for him. He must be absolutely laser focused on Saturday night and no complacency can be found in him as fighting at the higher weight is going to see some new things for him to contend with.
For the first time in his professional career he will not be the bully of an opponent in boxing and he will be confronted with something on fight night that he has never seen before.
Sparring is sparring and that is it.
Sparring ‘Zurdo’ is different to fighting him and although Zurdo will be a big underdog for most, he will be the naturally much taller and bigger fighter when he gets in there on the night.
This is something will grab Benavidez’ attention right way and sure, he should defeat Gilberto ‘Zurdo’ Ramirez to become a three-weight-world-boxing-champion — he needs to keep his eye on the ball.
That said, the weight move can also be advantageous if he decides it to be.
For one he won’t be overly exerting himself to make weight for a change which should in theory make him actually more powerful and maybe more explosive and maybe if he has done the weight right, maybe punch with even more force.
He will be able to rip combinations at pace into Ramirez and again, if he does the weight properly which we are lead to believe he is doing, and will do, this could actually enhance one of the better things Benavidez has going for him in boxing.
Which is his gas tank and stamina. This can be very above reproach and useful to him in some of his bouts and if he carries this same pace, work rate, engine, punch output and work rate up with him to cruiserweight, he could be somewhat impressive at cruiserweight on Saturday night.
Sure David Benavidez moves up cruiserweight is nothing to sneeze at for him though.
It is just below heavyweight at the end of the day and just one punch can get him into serious harms way with the force that cruiserweights hit with on the night — just beneath heavyweights don’t forget.
Ahead of the fight here’s our Benavidez vs Ramirez full fight analysis.
