There are very few better country’s in the world than Cuba when it comes to amateur boxing, they always produce some of the best boxers year in year out.
For those who enjoy the pure sweet science of boxing, the art of hitting and not getting hit, like we do and many do, there are few better at that than Cubans.
They understand the importance of landing score punches on your opponent while not putting yourself in harms way all the time.
Now, that doesn’t always translate to what fans in professional boxing want to see.
Particularly in the times we live in now where brawls, knockouts, wars of attrition, blood and guts is frequently what the consumer demands.
That said, some Cubans have bucked this trend in recent years and made their styles work for the professional game like David Morrell, Erislandy Lara, Rances Barthelmemy and Guillermo Rigondeaux before that.
The problem is, which doesn’t apply to the above four at all, is that sometimes they go from Cuba to America or Europe, the life style changes when they get lots of money and the discipline goes.
The Genius And Problem With Cuban Boxers
They can hit the booze, casinos or even drugs and what was once a champion in the making, goes back to being just the occasional contender.
That’s the risk with them but with the likes of Rigondeaux and others, they have shown that risk can pay off for fans following their professional boxing careers.
For pure boxing ability, there’s few better than them though.
That’s a fact.
Obviously in the next Olympics in LA 2028 the Cubans will be diligently preparing at the moment behind the scenes for it as we speak.
Obviously their amateur boxing set of and coaching and early development of fights is outstanding, that is a big help to them as well.
When they leave Cuba they also leave this and the Cuban way of life which is challenging for some Cubans but more and more are showing they have what it takes in the professional ranks in recent years to reach world championship contention level.
For us, when on his day, in his prime Guillermo Rigondeaux is the greatest Cuban boxer and would have battered Lomachenko had he fought him in his prime.
