Claressa Shields has been on a role in recent years in women’s boxing and has largely changed the game in women’s professional boxing.
And women’s boxing as a whole.
Shields is basically the first woman ever to make million dollar pay days and multi million dollar pay days in women’s boxing.
Before her, it was never done, sure, Katie Taylor did some of this as well but Shields in recent years has really taken things to the next level.
She is by far well and above all her piers in America easily and so much so she even had a very successful movie on her life made and released at the box office last year.
We’ve touched on all her achievements before on here of course for both women’s boxing and women’s sport and for her country of America, but it is important as boxing very soon, comes into a very special time as a sport, and goes to levels not seen before since Muhammad Ali’s days in the sport maybe, that Shields comes along for the ride.
Sure, men’s boxing is going to go to astronomical levels with new corporations like Netflix, Paramount, the BBC in the UK (back in pro boxing), DAZN and many more bringing boxing to new audiences, new countries, new age groups, attracting many new fans, but there is a market for women’s boxing when there is good fights there.
How Claressa Shields Changed The Game In Women’s Boxing
The Taylor vs Serrano fights proved popular with fans and when the fighters are evenly matched, the bouts are compelling, Shields has shown that in some of her fights.
She is the women’s heavyweight champion now and the trouble is the biggest fight out there for her is against Muhammad Ali’s daughter in Laila Ali — whom has not boxed for some time.
If they can get that fight on Netflix or Paramount or DAZN and build it up in America and worldwide online well, it can be huge for women’s boxing.
After that though, most likely the best way to market Shields and make her name bigger in America and around the world is to keep her in the women’s heavyweight division.
Unless a really big name came along below that weight or somehow, some way, they could make a catchweight fight with Katie Taylor, that is the other big fight as well.
But if you keep Shields in the heavyweight division what you could do if you were one of her handlers is use the novelty of her fighting against much bigger physically opponents as a way to make the fights compelling to the average sports fan who doesn’t know much about boxing or maybe tuning into the sport for the first time.
Like a David vs Goliath type deal each time she fights, put her in against very large women and with her ability and speed and boxing IQ, she will still win most likely more times than not.
She is still very young relatively speaking too so much time is ahead for big fights for her.
