Let us look at why boxing soon will be coming into more than a special time for the sport, a new day for the sweet science awaits.
Back in the 80s and even part of the early 90s in the UK on ITV and BBC there was many times where big world title fights were actually on free television to mass numbers of people.
The rights fees were there were pay per view as a model was not needed and big sponsors and advertisers could help TV companies offset the cost of paying the fighters and event promoters and teams.
Now, fast forward into 2025 and everything has changed whereby streaming is now the main way not only boxing but much of sport is now shown to the masses these days.
Why Free Big Boxing Fights Maybe Possible Again
This will only increase in the years ahead and with the internet’s usage increasing at the same time, there is an opportunity whereby maybe event and rights holders might be able to do some free to air cards online on their websites or social media or YouTube channels if the demand was there.
The numbers would have to be crazy big however to get a big company like Netflix or someone else, or a major advertiser or sponsor, to cover the difference in between of funding the big fights as free fights without signing up to their streaming platform or pay a monthly streaming fee.
In theory these cards would have to be bringing at least 15 to 20 million viewers surely at the least in a place like the US or UK or whatever market where the fight was big, where a big company could come up with the rights fees needed to pay the big bucks for the big fights.
That is where it is going though.
If the sport keeps growing as it is and the big fights keep happening, coupled with the continued growth in online and the commercial viability of the professional boxing product continue to prosper, there will be more money in the pot for such a day where a free world title fight online might be plausible by a big company making this happen.
