Roy Jones Jr is one of only two men in history to become middleweight and heavyweight champion of the world in professional boxing.
He did so by stepping up back in the day to heavyweight to out point John Ruiz in a classy display to win the WBA heavyweight title.
He knows how moving up in weight can effect the body and professional athletes more than most.
Roy Jones Compares Crawford vs Canelo To When He Went To Heavyweight
Next month Terence Crawford goes up in two weight classes to take on Canelo Alvarez in Las Vegas and Jones said to Ring Magazine:
“He (Crawford) bulked up to the weight. Just like I did as a heavyweight. He’s trained with super middleweights and lightweights. If you can handle them in training you can handle them in the fight. Weight shouldn’t be an issue.”
Weight doesn’t always win fights.
Particularly at the highest level, professional boxing.
It can help though and Alvarez’ main strength over Crawford will be size and power but Alvarez is a quality boxer himself.
People need to realize that Alvarez will look to box clever as well of course.
This could be a chess match in the early rounds.
‘Bud’ Crawford is well up for this fight — you can’t write off fighters like him.
