George Groves Opens Up On Why He's Now A Boxing Trainer

Many will remember some of the great fights London’s George Groves was in over the years and the big part he played in growing boxing.

People forget before people started selling out stadiums in the UK and indeed others did around the world after that too, it was George Groves and Carl Froch who got that stadium show rolling with their fight in the UK.

Before that Groves was in some great fights with James DeGale and others which were huge promotions on Sky in Europe.

He then went on to become world champion by winning the WBA super-middleweight title in 2017.

Not many know now however Groves is actually a boxing trainer. Speaking to IFL TV recently Groves opened up about him training boxers now:

“I love it. I think it was always my calling. I would’ve gravitated toward it eventually, but Lucas (Roehrig) was the one who made me take the leap. It’s a full-time job, back in the gym day in and day out. I’ve known him from my amateur club, and I believe in him. I didn’t stumble into this or piggyback on someone else’s coaching career as an assistant. I was always a fighter who paid attention in the gym. I was self-managed for the last six years of my career and worked with elite coaches like Adam Booth, Paddy Fitzpatrick, and Shane McGuigan. I’ve picked up things from them and from watching trainers like Abel Sanchez with Golovkin or Andre Ward’s uncle.”

Lucas Roehrig being the first fighter he trained.

Groves had been off the grid in boxing for some while, he doesn’t even do a whole lot of interviews that much.

Good luck to Groves in the new career which is still in boxing too – we are always surprised why more fighters don’t become trainers.

It is not everyone perhaps.
