Like William Scull, Yordenis Ugas is a former professional world champion, something few Cubans do after success in the amateurs.
They like people (in more recent times) such as Guillermo Rigondeaux, Rances Barthelemy, Erislandy Lara, Joel Casamayor and a few others are an exception to the rule.
William Scull disappointed in the big fight with Canelo Alvarez this weekend and Ugas said on the X platform:
“It was a historic weekend of boxing. The most important thing was the good pay for the boxers, and there were some fights with little action. In New York and Saudi Arabia. It’s a shame, so much money, so much visibility, and so much exposure invested in boxing, and the fans don’t get exciting fights. But nothing is like that; sometimes it happens. We hope that tomorrow, to close out this historic weekend with Inoue, we’ll have better fights.”
Well said, you know, you can’t always have home run main events and home run boxing cards.
He wasn’t alone in criticism of some fights this weekend.
That isn’t just boxing, that is any live professional sporting event.
Sometimes, well, in boxing’s case, most times, they hit.
On rare occasion they don’t.
Roll on Naoya Inoue’s big fight in Las Vegas tonight.
