Recently a big moment came in the sport with the premier star in professional boxing Canelo and a belt were involved.
Saudi Arabian adviser Turki Alalshikh who has helped transform the sport over the last year didn’t allow Alvarez to have the WBC belt in his photo op recently for the Scull fight announcement.
Speaking to Fight Hype renowned boxing trainer Robert Garcia spoke on the situation:
“I’ve heard a lot of people talking about it. I’m not very familiar with what really happened. Look, Turki came to boxing to change a lot of fighters’ lives, doing big events, putting the biggest fights and the biggest cards out there. I’m a trainer—I have fighters fighting on those cards—but I also have WBC champions, like Bam Rodriguez and Virgil. Mikey was a WBC champion. I’ve got four WBC titles as a trainer, bro, so I’ve got to support that too. It’s hard to take sides, but I think both have a point. The WBC has to defend itself and do its thing, but Turki’s doing his thing too. He’s changing a lot of lives. A lot of kids are making more money than they’ve ever seen in their lives, so we have to be with that too. I don’t want to take sides, but I support both. The WBC loves us, we love the WBC—I’ve got two WBC champions, four WBC belts they’ve given me. How can I turn my back on them? But I can’t turn my back on Turki either when he’s putting Virgil on those big cards and getting him paid money he maybe never expected.”
It is difficult to say what will happen later this year and next year in the sport.
One thing is sure, though, it will be big, and good for the sport.
Ultimately boxing fans want to see the best boxers in the world fight one another regularly throughout the year.
We are only at the beginning of seeing that happen again now in boxing — which has been refreshing this past twelve months or so.
