Not many know more about springing upsets in the sport of boxing than former heavyweight champion James ‘Buster’ Douglas.
On November 2nd, 1990 in Tokyo Douglas shocked the world by stopping Mike Tyson to become WBC, WBA and IBF world heavyweight champion at the time.
Still a feat considered one of the biggest upsets in boxing history today.
Tyson at the time being perceived as unbeatable.
Speaking ahead of the upcoming Mike Tyson vs Roy Jones fight to DJ Vlad ahead Douglas had the following to say:
“I was surprised that it was even announced (at all) because I was like, wait a minute, what does he see that I don’t see or, you know, because you’ve got to actually feel like you can beat somebody to expect the fight with them. That was really confusing because I know what he and I went through but then he turns around and he’s going to fight Mike, so I was like wow. He must see something or know something. But then I see he’s really doubting it now, debating or not whether he’s going to do it. So I don’t think it’s going to happen.”
On his pick for the fight he pulled no punches:
“I think (Roy) he has a chance but its a slim chance. Slimmer than Buster Douglas.”
Well, there you have it.
No mincing of words from Douglas here. He doesn’t seem to give Roy a chance at all.
