US boxing star Mikey Garcia is still in talks for his next bout at the moment but took time out of his busy schedule this past weekend to comment on ‘Filipino Flash’ Nonito Donaire’s world title win.
While the circumstances of the win were certainly unfortunate with Burnett having to pull out of the fight due to a freak back injury, even before that happened, Donaire still showed he was far from being a shot fighter like some had suggested beforehand.
Speaking to EsNews this was a sentiment Mikey Garcia echoed afterwards:
“I saw that (Donaire won the title again). Congrats to Nonito. 122lbs champion again, wow, that crazy. He’s such a cool dude, a great person, a great guy. He moved all the way back up to 126 came back down became champion, lost the title, came back and won the title again. That just tells you he’s one of the greats that can do it and still be champion when a lot of people were counting him out. You can lose one fight and they counted him out – now look at him.”
Doniare now moves on to face world champion Zolani Tete in the final of the World Boxing Super Series.
Talks have suggested already that the fight could take place in Manila in The Philippines.
