Gennady Golovkin will not have an easy touch or return to the ring following his rematch loss to Canelo Alvarez last month.
Golovkin ultimately came up short again on the judges’ cards against Canelo in Las Vegas but in a closer fight this time round.
Some thought that an immediate trilogy might be on the cards but not the case.
The WBC have ordered Golovkin to face Jermall Charlo next with the winner in line to get a shot at middleweight champion Canelo.
This should allow Canelo to make a voluntary defence which many expect to be against fellow promotional stablemate David Lemieux this December, who is coming off the back of a first round KO win over Gary ‘Spike’ O’Sullivan.
Golovkin vs Charlo is certainly a quality fight next up as well, a dangerous one for both guys and not a foregone conclusion.
Golovkin could be slightly out of his prime at this point with Charlo right bang in the middle of his if anything.
An excellent piece of matchmaking.
