No one won the vacant WBO super-flyweight title in Super Fly 3 as it turned out tonight after Donnie Nietes and Aston Palicte fought to a split decision draw.
The Forum in Inglewood played host to tonight’s fight between the two Filipino warriors but in the end the fight didn’t deliver as much action as people had hoped before hand.
Coupled with that, the split decision draw left people further frustrated after the bout on HBO.
Here’s how some of the boxing community have been reacting to the fight and result thus far:
Donnie Nietes and Aston Palicte fight to a draw in a battle for the vacant 115-pound title relinquished by Naoya Inoue. Scores: 118-110 Nietes, 116-112 Palicte, 114-114. Nietes appeared to clearly win, but please, no rematch. Boring fight #Superfly3

Nietes didn’t look physical enough for the top guys in the class and a rematch would just waste time on an aging frame

So you’re saying Donnie Nietes dominated the 12th round in which he came close to closing the deal, but it was all just to salvage a draw?? #HBOBoxing

Donnie Nietes needs to fight someone with a name, and soon. He’s wasting the twilight of his career with fights like that against Palicte.

Watching HBO and I see @knuckleheadsean in disbelief, with good reason. That was ********! Donnie NIETES robbed by idiots! Terrible.

Donnie Nietes vs. Aston Palicte ends in a split-decision draw. One judge has it 116-112 for Palicte, one had it 118-110 for Nietes, while the third had it 114-114 even. The WBO junior flyweight title remains vacant.
