Former IBF heavyweight champion Charles Martin who lost his belt to Anthony Joshua a couple of years ago had been on a mini comeback run in the sport.
Now trained under trainer Jeff Mayweather, you could tell Martin had made some noticeable improvements since the loss to Joshua.
After back to back wins since the Joshua loss, the comeback run got stopped for the time being however against impressive Polish heavyweight Adam Kownacki last night.
Kownacki won a unanimous points decision but that didn’t tell the story of how close the fight was and in particular, how much heart and guts Martin showed in what was overall a good fight to watch.
Martin’s stock if anything will have gone up after the fight and fighting live on Showtime on the Danny Garcia vs Shawn Porter card last night, his name will have only got out there even more.
But what a win by Kownacki who extended his unbeaten record in the pros to 17-0-14KO.
What a tough, relentless customer who could very well make himself into a contender in the division in the coming years.
At 29 years of age he’s still relatively young in heavyweight terms too.
If he can keep developing there is no reason why he can’t break into the top 10 heavyweights in the world and get himself some big fights next year.
