What Weight Would Manny Pacquiao vs Mikey Garcia Be At?

Amir Khan Gives Take On Manny Pacquiao vs Mikey Garcia

Mikey Garcia confirmed during the week that talks are ongoing for a possible Manny Pacquiao showdown as his potential fight with Errol Spence looks off the table for now.

It was widely thought that lightweight dynamo Garcia (39-0-30KO) would move up to welterweight to challenge IBF champion Errol Spence in a possible pay per view fight on Showtime by the end of the year.

However it looks like much of Showtime’s big fight calendar will be announced in January instead as part of a new three-year deal with Premier Boxing Champions.

That said, if Tyson Fury vs Deontay Wilder happens this side of Christmas, expect that to take place on Showtime pay per view.

Going back to Garcia vs Pacquiao.

This is a fight that could happen on a number of platforms and through a number of promoters at the moment.

Given the fact both fighters are in the market talking to new streaming platform DAZN and promoter Eddie Hearn of Matchroom.

Pacquiao has fought primarily at welterweight in recent times and a bout with Garcia one would imagine would need Garcia to move up one, if not two entire weight classes.

Moving up two weight divisions at a time in boxing has not been fruitful in recent memory however.

Think of Kell Brook moving from welterweight to middleweight to face Gennady Golovkin, Amir Khan going from welterweight to middleweight to face Canelo Alvarez and even a few years back Adrien Broner moving up two weights from lightweight to welterweight.

Perhaps the most sensible option would be a catchweight fight at super-lightweight but with Pacquiao now holding a title again at welteweight, one would imagine he won’t want to give that up after just winning the WBA strap against Lucas Matthysse.
