Former heavyweight champion Shannon ‘The Cannon’ Briggs, or ‘Lets Go Champ!’ as he’s known to some, has had some words of warning and advice for current heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua ahead of his next fight.
Joshua takes on dangerous Russian Alexander Povetkin on September 22nd at Wembley stadium in London, England in a fight that will be shown live on the DAZN streaming app in the US and on Sky Sports Box Office in the UK.
Speaking to Kugan Cassius of IFL TV, Briggs said Joshua needs to be wary of the Russian heavyweight:
“He’s in a tough fight coming up with Povetkin. It’s a 50/50 fight. Trust me. It’s going to be a war. If he can get past Joshua’s jab, if he can get inside and make it a fight. He’s very good at punching off the break, he’s very good at springing forward, this guy Povetkin. Very fast at springing forward. When it breaks he can get at you quick. If he can get inside of Joshua it’s going to be a problem.”
He added words of advice for Joshua:
“You’ve got to get busy with that jab. You’ve got to put that jab on that man’s forehead. You feel me. You’ve got to connect with that right hand. You got to clean his clock. When you come at him with that hook, got to go, his whole head has got to go! When you comeback with that hook and if he’s still there after that right hand you better come with that hook! I’m talking about taking him out and get back on your jab if he’s still there. Lets go champ!”
The fight is just under one month away now with both fighters having started their sparring at this stage.
Roll on September 22nd.
