Former world heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko knows a thing or two about big title fights in the heavyweight division after sharing the ring with the likes of Lennox Lewis.
The result didn’t go the way of the big man from Ukraine that night but he’s long been a figure in the sport respected and admired for his accomplishments, like his brother Wladimir, for both his in and out of the ring achievements.
Always a great ambassador for the sport.
The heavyweight fight nowadays that the world wants to see at the moment is the one between Anthony Joshua and Deontay Wilder.
Negotiations are understood to be in an advanced stage at the moment but still, at this time, with no fight officially confirmed.
Speaking to The Guardian, Vitali Klitschko had the following to say on the potential bout:
“The question always when there are many world champions is: who is the strongest one? That’s why to fight Wilder is very good. Right now Joshua is a champion. With this fight, he can be a star.”
There’s no doubt that Joshua is the bigger star and attraction in the fight but at the same time Wilder brings a lot to the bout too.
Namely with his WBC title and American TV behind him, plus the fact he is undefeated and comes into a potential bout off the back of a more exciting display than Joshua (his KO of Luis Ortiz last time out versus Joshua’s points win over Joseph Parker).
Whether the fight happens in the UK or US remains to be seen but based on recent murmurings behind the scenes, the feeling is that the bout will happen this year.
At some point.
