Tony Bellew has to be one of the most brutally honest boxers in the sport today. Truthfulness this raw is much more than refreshing to see – it’s down right rare.
Tony Bellew like him or not is as real as they come when it comes to boxers.
A man never afraid to speak his mind or mince his works, his unrelenting belief in his ability shone through last weekend when for the second time he shocked the odds makers to stop David Haye inside the distance..
Following the bout an emotional Bellew revealed to IFL TV what he told Haye moments after beating him:
“I begged him, as soon as he came over to me and grabbed hold of me, I begged him to stop. I begged him to stop. Boxing is a young man’s sport. It’s not a sport to be messing round with.”
Whether Haye decides to box on remains to be seen – but it would not be surprising if he called it a day at this stage.
He’s achieved pretty much everything in boxing and can walk away with his head held high, faculties intact and money in the bank if he does choose to call it a day.
As for Bellew, it’s on wards and up wards for at least one more big fight you’d have to think.
With this kind of momentum the lure of one more big prize-fight should be enough to see him box at least once more.
