Ireland’s Gary Spike O’Sullivan is set for a huge opportunity in September against Canelo Alvarez provided he wins his next fight against an opponent to be confirmed.
While the story broke in recent days and made huge waves in boxing, nothing official had come about it as of yet.
However Spike’s own promoter Ken Casey told SiriusXM Boxing that the story is indeed true:
“I didn’t know that was officially released, well then – its official. That is the plan yeah. For Spike it’s kind of the pinnacle of this sport. If Canelo wins this fight then it really is the pinnacle of the sport. But either way – it’s a huge fight. Spike obviously has to win his fight in Vegas. The opponent is to be determined. I’m just thrilled for Spike to get an opportunity like this. He’s a showman, he’s a puncher. He should be a star. When people get to see him on a wider audience they are going to fall in love with how he is in the ring.”
Canelo first takes on Gennady Golovkin on May 5th in a Las Vegas super fight for the middleweight championship of the world.
O’Sullivan’s next opponent and date is to be confirmed. He last fought on December 16th and recorded a huge stoppage win over Antoine Douglas live on HBO.
