Those wishing to see a Mikey Garcia vs Jorge Linares fight in 2018 have been given some good news by the powers that be.
Jorge Linares will fight later this month on January 27th against Mercito Gesta in defence of his WBA world lightweight title at the Forum in Inglewood, California.
On the other hand, Mikey Garcia (who is the WBC champion at lightweight) will challenge IBF title holder Sergey Lipinets on February 2nd in San Antonio Texas next month.
After these matches the WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman has issued the following statement as part of his organisation’s January meeting:
”Both champions will fight each other immediately after their bouts.”
Those hoping for a Lomachenko vs Garcia fight, that was highly thought to be next, might have to wait a while.
But this isn’t a bad replacement to be fair. A cracking fight in fact.
Furthermore, there could be a host of belts on the line if both men win their respective bouts which is always good to see in boxing.
When not only two of the best in a division come together and fight – but also try to unify the division.
Style-wise, you’d have to expect this fight could provide a lot of different things, too. Skill, power, speed and plenty more.
A clash to genuinely look forward to and some further good news for boxing to kick of 2018.
