WBO middleweight champion Saunders reacts to defeating Lemieux in a dominant performance fighting away from home.
Despite a frustrating couple of years since initially winning the WBO title due to inactivity, Billy Joe Saunders can go away and enjoy a well deserved Christmas holiday period after managing to end 2017 on a positive note with back to back wins over Willie Monroe Jr and now David Lemieux on points last night.
After the fight the champion said:
“I knew what sort of fighter David Lemieux is, and I knew what sort of coach he’s got. I knew what he was coming for. I look easy to hurt, but you can’t hit me. I like going to somebody’s backyard because I perform better. I’m a whole different animal now. When I hurt David, I wanted to put it on him. I really did, but that’s what I pay my trainer Dominic Ingle to do. I went to put it on him, but he told me to take my time, and that was the best advice.”
Southpaw Saunders’ boxing skills proved too much for Lemieux in the end as he won a shut out by unanimous decision with scorecards reading 120-108, 117-111, and 118-110 in favor of the Englishman.
