The Canelo Alvarez vs Gennady Golovkin gate exceeded expectations and shows that boxing is most certainly in a very healthy place.
The event was a sellout weeks before the fight ever took place, which wasn’t a surprise considering the compelling nature of the fight itself.
They managed to get the ticket pricing spot on. Not too high which proved to be detrimental in the past to some ticket sales in other events.
The fight did just over $27 million dollars at the gate as per official figures released from the Nevada State Athletic Commission.
That makes it the third biggest gate in boxing history behind Mayweather vs Pacquiao and Mayweather vs McGregor respectively.
The number of pay per view buys the fight did is not officially known just yet. Expect news on this soon and when it comes, expect it to be sizeable.
The rematch of the fight is expected next May on Cinco De Mayo weekend – with Canelo’s large Mexican fan base who no doubt will turn out in their droves to support their man.
Whether both fighters box between then and now remains to be seen.
One would suspect they won’t however. Given the size and importance of the rematch which will be even bigger now after the judging controversy of the first fight.
