Antonio Margarito vs Carson Jones Tonight In Mexico

On a relatively quiet weekend for pro boxing there’s an interesting fight between Antonio Margarito vs Carson Jones taking place tonight.

Former Mexican world champion Antonio Margarito returns against American Carson Jones tonight in Gimnasio Manuel Bernardo Aguirre, Chihuahua, Mexico.

In many ways it represents Margarito’s last chance at a run at a title or even a significant fight at 39 years of age now.

He knows a defeat to 31 year old American Carson Jones on his home soil of Mexico would likely spell the end of any chance at landing a significant fight – anywhere near world level again.

Margarito has been piping up about a trilogy fight with Puerto Rico’s Miguel Cotto all week following Cotto’s points win last week in California.

It could be a seller for sure, but whether or not Cotto would choose to give him the opportunity could be another story.

Cotto’s trainer Freddie Roach has intimated that he would like Cotto’s final fight of his career to be in December against the winner of Gennady Golovkin vs Canelo Alvarez that takes place on September 16th in Las Vegas.

If that didn’t come off for Cotto though, I wouldn’t be surprised if he picked his last fight to be against Margarito.

The two have significant history and bad blood still appears to remain somewhat. It would likely sell quite well too.

American Carson Jones could upset all those plans tonight however with a win on Mexican soil against Margarito.

Jones comes into the fight in relatively decent form with three stoppage wins on the bounce since suffering defeat to Englishman Brian Rose back in 2015.

In a relatively fifty-fifty fight, it’s hard to see Jones getting a decision in Mexico against Margarito but it’s also tough to see how Jones could stop the Mexican inside the distance too. I’m not quite sure he has enough pop to do that.

The two stoppages in Margarito’s career have come to Miguel Cotto and Shane Mosley.

Never say never of course, but it’s tough to see anything other than a Margarito win tonight on his home soil of Mexico – with the motivation of a possible Cotto trilogy at stake to boot.
