Mayweather Reveals Glove Size He’ll Use Against McGregor

Mayweather reveals glove size and brand that he’ll use despite conflicting reports in recent weeks surrounding the glove weight.

In boxing the rumour mill has a way of sometimes stating things as fact that are simply not.

Various reputable media outlets in recent weeks reported that Floyd Mayweather and Conor McGregor would be wearing 10 ounce gloves for their August 26th fight – but the American has now clarified that this was wrong.

He will be wearing 8 ounce gloves for the fight. This is very significant as these are typically classed as ‘puncher’s gloves’.

He obviously thinks he will put McGregor away inside the distance, as he’s expected to.

Because the gloves are less in weight typically professional boxers can deliver more knockouts by wearing them as opposed to 10 ounce gloves.

It is also significant in that many believe McGregor’s only chance is in fact that, a puncher’s chance, so likely the Irishman will be pleased with this contract detail.

Traditionally glove disputes always happen around big fights, in terms of what brand might be used and so on.

Mayweather has stated that he’ll be using Grant gloves and clarified everything on Instagram saying:

“Don’t believe what you hear in the media. Don’t believe what you hear on blog sites. If it’s not coming directly from me, then it’s not true. I’m telling McGregor, “Let’s fight in 8 oz gloves”. McGregor can fight in any brand he prefers or chooses. I’ll be wearing 8 oz Grant gloves. Whatever advantage McGregor needs to feel more comfortable in the ring, I’m willing to accommodate. Let’s give the boxing and MMA fans what they want to see.”

Surely the Irishman will accept this as he’s used to fighting with even smaller 4 ounce gloves in his MMA fights in the UFC.

So the smaller the gloves – the better for him realistically.

It is important to realize however that despite Mayweather’s claims above, that the Nevada State Athletic Commission rules prohibit gloves under 10 ounce in weight for fights at the contracted weight for this bout – 154lbs.

Mayweather is no stranger to gloves disputes mind you.
