This time in 2005 fans of Ricky ‘The Hitman’ Hatton were treated to his finest hour in a professional ring when he dethroned the pound for pound rated Kostya Tszyu in front of a passionate, sold out home crowd in Manchester.

Where the fight took place, the Manchester Arena, was in the news recently for tragic reasons due to the recent terror attack at a concert at the venue.

Back then the arena was called the MEN and it was a fond stomping ground for Hatton and his fanatic support who cheered him on to many a victory there.

The fight with Tszyu is one this writer remembers fondly, a bout that showed in many ways what the human spirit is capable of when it wants something more than anything.

Simply put, Hatton was not to be denied on this night. His bulldozing tactics and iron chin relentlessly broke his esteemed opponent’s heart in the end.

A ferocious performance from Hatton that he credits as the best win of his career.

After the fight, Tszyu, a renowned warrior, commented that he knew he could not win by the time of the stoppage in the fight when he retired from the bout.
