But he had to shake off a lot of ring rust early on during a frustrating opening few rounds for him.
Washington proved to be a tricky operator for Wilder early on, boxing well and using distance to fluster the champion.

A conclusive ending for Wilder. Wild by name and wild by nature.
But no doubt a less than satisfactory one for him in terms of the opening rounds.
He’s a realist and he’ll know in his heart of hearts that he’ll need to step it up in his next fight against a big opponent – well known to the wider boxing fan demographic and casual sports fan.
The likes of Anthony Joshua, Tyson Fury, Wladimir Klitschko or even a unification with someone like Joseph Parker are fights that many fans would like to see the likeable American in next.
But in his defence, he was returning from a serious enough injury last night as well – relatively sooner than people expected him to also.
The big fights are what fans want to see ‘The Bronze Bomber’ in next.
Whether they are in the States or abroad, as long as it’s a big fight.
