Canelo Injury Rules Mexican Out of Action Until 2017

A Canelo injury to his hand while it is not suspected to be serious, will see the Mexican boxer now sit out for the remainder of the 2016 boxing season.

Canelo last fought against Liam Smith last month in Dallas, in what was an entertaining battle that ultimately saw the Golden Boy signed fighter emerge with a TKO victory over a very game Smith.

However Canelo suffered an injury to his right hand during the fight which according to reports this week, was not as serious as first suspected in that it will not require surgery, but will still keep WBO the super-welterweight champion sidelined until next year.

2017 is shaping up to big a big one for Canelo (48-1-1-34KO).

Canelo has recorded two stoppage wins this year

At the age of 26 we could begin to see him next year come into the very beginning of his prime at the age of 27. Of course, the big fight that everyone wants is him and Golovkin that has eluded us for so long, but I’m optimistic we’ll see that fight happen next year after a recent chat with Steve Kim.

Alvarez has showed consistent improvement in recent times and despite Smith not been a well known name in the States, he was a legitimate test as a world champion and big super-welterweight and I was impressed with how Canelo’s boxing skills dealt with him.

Other than been outclassed by Floyd Mayweather, I think sometimes Canelo doesn’t necessarily get full credit for his boxing tools, which are expanding all the time.

Although some calls have come this year that he was ducking Golovkin I don’t believe it was Canelo himself, more so his handlers and the political situations that often arise in big fight negotiations.

Fighters will fight anyone. That’s just what they do.

Next year options are going to plentiful for Canelo and before the Golovkin fight happens, it will be interesting to see who he squares off with in between then and now.

A showdown with the UK’s Kell Brook could make for entertaining viewing in the meantime between a speculated September showdown between Canelo and Golovkin.

Come next September, you’d have to think that Canelo will have finally outgrown the 154lbs weight class too, as he then hopefully steps into the ring for the fight the world wants to see with ‘GGG’.
