Freddie Roach: Pacquiao Didn’t Know Who Golovkin Was

It would appear that Manny Pacquiao isn’t much of a boxing fan outside of his own fighting and training. When he met one of the sport’s leading pound for pound stars recently, Pacquiao didn’t known who Golovkin actually was when the middleweight kindpin asked him for a picture.

It’s not uncommon for athletes within their respective sports to not care too much for them outside of their own personal endeavours within them, but we found this story a little funny – admittedly.

During the week at a media gathering in Vegas ahead of tonight’s Crawford vs Postol fight at the MGM, trainer to Postol Freddie Roach touched on a story recently where Gennady Golovkin paid a visit to his Wild Card gym in Hollywood.

Roach was with one of his other fighting pupils at the time, his star one Manny Pacquiao, who Golovkin approached for a picture as a fan.

Freddie said of the meeting between the two boxers that:

“Manny is not a TV guy. Manny took a picture last month with GGG. GGG came to visit, he’s a very nice guy, he’s very polite and respectful and he was waiting for Manny to come out of the dressing room to take a picture.”

He continued:

“He took the picture and I got on the mitts with Manny a little bit later and Manny said Freddy who was that guy I took a picture with? I said Manny do you watch TV? He said not much.”

Freddie went on to mention how Manny is actually a much bigger fan of basketball in comparison to boxing, which might make Golovkin feel a little better.

From a boxing perspective, Pacquiao (58-6-2-38KO) has now been officially confirmed for a comeback fight later this year on November 5th at the Thomas and Mack Center in Las Vegas to fight an opponent to be announced.
