Watch: Smith Jr vs Fonfara Highlights (Don’t Blink)

Light-Heavyweight Joe Smith Jr captured the WBC international title last night on a Premier Boxing Champions show in Chicago, but it’s perhaps the way he won it that will be remembered more than anything. A truly explosive display.

26 year old Joe Smith Jr (22-1-18KO) might have come into the NBC televised bout as an underdog, but he left in triumph when in the very first round he put Poland’s Andrzej Fonfara away with some clinical punching and when the time came, ruthless finishing.

Fonfara is known to fight fans over the years after mixing at a very high level in the sport, having fought the likes of Adonis Stevesnon, Julio Cesar Chavez Jr, Nathan Cleverly and Glen Johnson in recent times.

Of that list above, he only lost to Adonis Stevenson (current WBC light-heavyweight champion) and took him the distance on that occasion in 2014 too.

Sso when Joe Smith Jr came in last night and essentially blew him out of the water, not many expected it.

Smith Jr from Long Island, New York, was fighting against a heavily partizan crowd in favor of Fonfara on the night, too, but when his first big right hand landed, he made sure that Fonfara would be visiting the canvas again, forcing the referee to wave off proceedings.
