Canelo vs Khan PPV Buys Appear To Have Flopped

It appears that boxing fans spoke with their wallets last weekend when it came to the Canelo vs Khan PPV buys for HBO.

It was a big weekend for Mexico, been the Cinco de Mayo weekend – which is traditionally a big period for boxing in recent years (although it usually involved a Floyd Mayweather fight).

Despite Canelo being Mexico’s current boxing superstar, pay per view sales don’t appear to have gone too well for HBO in America, with journalists reporting that they are strangely refusing to reveal what the number was:

So HBO tells me that they will not be releasing PPV numbers for Canelo-Khan…. #boxing

The reason for the poor performance? It could be a culmination of factors.

Some fight fans might have seen through the fact it was a welterweight stepping up to take on a much bigger man, a strong middleweight, and thought to themselves that it was just never going to be a competitive fight and wasn’t worth dropping dollars for.

The big reason though in my opinion? Technology.

With the explosion of video on the internet at the moment and the advent of new technology on Facebook such as ‘Facebook live’, it is likely that HBO’s pay per view buys were affected by fans streaming the event online in some shape or form.

Although the official number for the pay per view performance has not been revealed, Lance Pugmire believes it did less than 600,000, a number far below the potential 2 million that some predicted it could do beforehand:

Looks like @canelo @amirkingkhan did just under 600 k PPV buys…
