Terry Flanagan vs Derry Mathews: Betting Preview and Odds
Tonight will see Mancunian Terry Flanagan and Liverpudlian Derry Mathews square off for the WBO lightweight championship of the world in Liverpool’s Echo Arena.
Coming into the fight both men are in red hot form, with undefeated champion Flanagan (29-0-12KO) fresh off a stoppage win over Diego Magdaleno and Matthews (38-9-2-20KO) riding a four fight win streak.
Although Manchester’s Flanagan is the champion, he will travel to his rival’s backyard in Liverpool which might see a little bit of extra support in the crowd for Mathews on the night.
Nevertheless, if you were a betting man, the bookies seem to have the champion as a warm favourite to win the fight outright (all images via oddschecker.com):
However, as many well informed fight fans and people within boxing will tell you, write Derry Mathews off at your peril.
This has been proven time and time again in the Scouser’s proud boxing career, where on many an occasion he has turned a fight around with his immense heart, and also notably his equalizing power.
This power makes him a live dog in the fight for me, and although Flanagan is the favourite, for those looking for more value in a cheeky bet on the fight, these betting markets might be more up your alley:
Funnily enough, the draw above at 25/1 in this particular bout appeals to me for some reason, as I’m not sure either man will stop the other and it could be a very close affair. Maybe worth a cheeky fiver.
For the more realistic however, the smart money appears to be on a Flanagan points decision but in truth, its a difficult fight to call.
Both men looked in good shape at yesterday’s weigh-in, each making weight and looking confident.
Finally, if you were to fancy a stoppage somewhere along the way in this one, here’s what you’d be looking at for your round betting markets:
