Despite the fight been billed as the first marquee contest of GGG’s career, Golovkin implemented a one sided beat down on the world class David Lemieux to become unified middleweight champion of the world, extending his knockout streak to a remarkable 21 knockouts, improving his KO ratio to a scary 92% (approx) and solidifying himself as boxing’s new star.
His boxing skills proved to be the difference in the early rounds, with his jab been a key weapon in breaking Lemieux up. GGG was also very accurate in his work, and you could tell there was some respect for Lemieux’s punching power in his approach.
Despite Lemieux showing plenty of courage and heart, it just wasn’t enough to cope with the whirlwind that is Gennady Golovkin, a frightening man for any middleweight in any era of boxing to step in the ring with.
The end came in the 8th round when the referee waved off the fight, having seen Leimieux take enough of a battering.
The win takes this 33 year old middleweight tank to 34-0 (31KO), with his credentials as boxing’s new star surely confirmed.
