Gennady Golovkin has now seen Canelo Alvarez’ apology that cost him their May 5th super fight that was previously scheduled for the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
Golovkin and his promoter instead are scrambling to try to find a late replacement for the same night but in a different State (California).
With the clock ticking it is not known whether Golovkin will fight on the same date at this point, or instead opt to wait until a new date later in the summer when a more suitable opponent becomes available.
The fight has also been moved from HBO pay per view to regular HBO and due to a decreased offer in money because of this change, Irishman Gary ‘Spike’ O’Sullivan turned down the offer to fight Golovkin after the money kept going down.
Golovkin when recently speaking to a group of reporters at his own press conference, dismissed the Canelo apology:
“Last press conference he said ‘I can’t, I’m sorry, I apologize, it’s my fault. This is crazy, you know, this is crazy for people. He’s not sorry, no. He’s not a huge ambassador for boxing. He’s terrible man!”
With previously mooted opponent O’Sullivan now scheduled to fight on ESPN on May 4th, Golovkin is not left with a lot of options as to who he could face on May 5th given the short notice.
It comes down to does he want to stay busy or hold out for a bigger fight in the summer.
Time will tell but all in all – the whole situation has come as one big disappointment for boxing fans.
