Shakur Stevenson reaction to Ryan Garcia knocking out might be not far off

Shakur Stevenson calls Ryan Garcia one of boxing’s faces after his dominant second-round TKO of Conor Benn. Here’s why that claim holds weight — even if the quick finish taught us little about Garcia’s ceiling.

First off, Garcia said that Garcia is possibly one of the big faces of boxing in the sport at this point.

After knocking out a boxer that Stevenson called in Conor Benn, a one dimensional fighter.

He might have a point, some notes on this;

  • He’s right that Garcia is a face of boxing — the crowds, the chaos, the attention all prove it.
  • But 85 seconds is not a real test of anything at world level.
  • His chin wasn’t tested once — Benn never landed anything meaningful.
  • The right hand looked sharp, but Benn’s defense was poor before the finish.
  • Garcia predicted a five-round KO, so beating Benn in two says more about Benn than Garcia.
  • The fight produced zero moments of struggle, so we still don’t know if Garcia can solve real problems.
  • Stevenson is right about the star — but being a face of boxing doesn’t mean we know how good the fighter actually is.

At the end of the day Garcia is one of the most famous boxers in America and on the planet, that is makes him certainly one of the big faces in boxing.

He did not really get out of first gear tonight as he did not need to, other than to close the bout so early.

Certainly for social media supporters, Ryan Garcia has many of them.

But he should have been fighting Devin Haney in there tonight, something that had it had happened, would have been one of the biggest fights in years in America and professional boxing around the globe.

He missed the boat on that.

Garcia vs Benn provided a stoppage and some solid fights on the card so spectators cannot complain too much.

Though the main event fighters had proved to be matched against opponents that they had far more boxing ability than, at the end of the day.
