Rolly Romero’s power was his only path to victory, but he couldn’t find the finishing shot against a hurt Teofimo Lopez.
Pulling the trigger not enough had been a major story for Rolly on Saturday night.
He did land at times, and big shots, but needed to land more on Lopez.
Some notes on this after the fight;
- Only really in a big manner shined in the fifth round
- Opened cut but couldn’t capitalize on Lopez bust up face
- Lopez recovered, he should not have let him
- One big punch wasn’t enough
- Couldn’t land the finishing blow, too hesitant
- Fought like a “glorified sparring session” needed more urgency
- Hometown crowd couldn’t will him
- Taunted by Lopez when hurt but that meant nothing, should have been hitting him
- Failed to deliver dramatic finish on the big occasion at the end of the day
The reason in the end just maybe Rolando Romero had not been that very elite level champion that can close a fight in the moments they have their opponents hurt.
That is something that cannot be taught by trainers or developed.
That is something that proper champions have in them in professional boxing and he let Lopez off the hook at times.
He should not have let Lopez survive in there, not enough malice and spite in his punches.
Rolly Romero reached his level in boxing by defeating an under par, declining, past his best, not focused, Ryan Garcia over 15 months ago or so.
Garcia had been out of the sport from a ban for a period of time before that, also.
Nonetheless, Romero an entertaining fighter still at 147 pounds.
Rolly Romero vs Teofimo Lopez an entertaining but controversial scrap, in the end.
