Rolly Romero’s lack of activity and reluctance to engage cost him his welterweight title against Teofimo Lopez.
That surely had been the main contributing factor to his defeat in Las Vegas on Saturday night.
He could have been victorious if he had just landed more and done more, and finished better.
Some thoughts on this briefly;
- Averaged just 29 punches per round
- Content moving instead of pressing
- Failed to follow trainer’s instructions
- Only double-digit landed in round five
- Landed just 49 of 167 power shots, they had been big ones often though
- Too predictable hunting for counter hook
- Lacked urgency throughout the fight
- Costly 15-month layoff showed, needed more activity coming in
- Patience beats waiting for knockout
- Earning “Reluctant Rolly” nickname at the moment
Rolly had not fought since last year in defeating Ryan Garcia to get the belt and Lopez had fought just earlier this year.
In his points defeat to Shakur Stevenson.
That activity might have been a big reason in Romero just not having enough output and punch volume, it proved costly.
Good scrap for boxing on Saturday night, controversial scoring though in Teofimo Lopez v Rolly Romero in Vegas, no doubt about it.
Teofimo Lopez scrapes through.
